Reaction To Date Line's on The Brink

While viewing the show:

Watching the Date Line‬ show, very frustrating are people just realizing the break downs in the system. This is the kind of shit my mom and I were dealing with 20+ years ago. The school system throws their hand up at the age of 21 and other service will not touch you until you are on the streets. what the hell man does everything really comes down to money, what the fuck does that say about us as a society?
Also what direction did the media want to take on the story. The system is not perfect and eats the good people up. I know that i would not who I am without my ninjas in place.

The morning after:

I cannot stop thinking about the dateline show on the Brink, at least no one can say it was inspiration porn. It would be easy to point figures at the parent and teachers, because they all knew the wall was coming. I still say the system just eats up the good people since they get tired of hitting the wall.  For me it makes me think if my voice as an advocate is really being heard, I think shows this can discourage as all. It just show how much more work there is to do.
With my generation we were told be thankful what you get, because people were still locking us away like we did not even exist. People say the young generation are rude, act like they are entitled to everything.  Really I do not think that is a bad thing for PWD, are we not entitled to be treated as equals as members of society. The system is just broken, even if we make too much money or fall in love our benefits are penalized. If you get too much help from your family, you do not qualify for services to make you independent.  Really the system is set up to make People with disabilities fail.

My Reaction to: Don't Hate The Cure, Hate the Haters! @theseed9811

I think it comes down to the quality of life. Some parents might want their children to have the same changes in life as they did and this can not be achieved while their child is disabled. I have been asked many time about the "Magic Pill" of I have always said hell no! I have three degree, live life as an Artist, have lovely wife and daughter. Not to say I been to the Oscar's and get to travel all over sharing my story. How many other able body people get to do that?

I do get nervous and sad when I about parents putting their kids through a experimental surgery, or treatment when it causes them pain and time from living life. For example, when I at Ridge school there were kids that missed school months at a time due to surgery to have there hamstrings cut. In order to have their legs be able to stand flat footed and most of the time it did not work. So was it worth them missing out on school and the social aspect for this surgery.

in recent years people have been doing experimental treatment with Botox. Lets think about this, they putting poison into one's body to relax/tighten muscles. None of this is permanent, so every few months you need another shot.

Why not use the same time, energy and funds to make their environment more accessible for their lives? To me that would seem more beneficial and for all. I just all of the money being spent on "Medicine" When it could use for long lasting accessibility!

Disability Population In U.S. and The World Pt. 2

The reason why I got the urge to search out the disabilities population information.  It is just frustrating to see one disability getting more attention then others. Maybe Autism is getting the spot light because of the Sandy Hook shooting, but more likely that Jenny McCarthy and her son got a lot of media coverage.  Also that some people think that Autism is cause by vaccination shots and could be preventable. I think that is cool, the more people that talk about Autism bring more awareness  and hopefully that turns into more acceptance of all disabilities.
When comparing Autism to CP, people see Commercials for lawyers to sue doctors. CP was due to a medical mistake so let sue them, because it takes a lot of money to take of someone CP.

Disability Population In U.S. and The World

I have been meaning looking up the break down of the disabled population since Autism is about the only one you really hear people taking about.

Here is one link, but not really want I was looking for: Facts About Disability in the U.S. Population.

When I was reading this one, I got a bit offended. I do realize that they are generalizing, but not everyone that is disabled comes from low educated and from low income areas: World Facts and Statistics on Disabilities and Disability Issues.

When it comes down to it, I think people do not know what they are taking about when keeping tract of the  disabled population. I found it too general and a lot of the language is offensive.  For example,  Jonathan's 40% Rule: Hearing Impairment is like alcohol and drug abuse--there's tremendous denial. Source Maybe for people who are growing older, but I do not think that statement would go over well at Gallaudet U. or in the deaf community.

I think its hysterical that the CDC keeps stats on "Cerebral Palsy Occurrence in the US", maybe this why people still think of CP  as a decease and an illness. Also notes that Autism and Developmental Disabilities are included in these statistics. Is the CDC just counting people with combined disabilities, or just grouping everything together? If the CDC keeps tract of "Cerebral Palsy Occurrence", does this mean we could of a CP apocalypse and take over the world?

So this  makes me wonder how each organization comes up with statistics? I would also like  to ask how the organizations defining a disability and what is a person has multiple disabilities?

National Council on Disability's Letter to the President after Newtown Tragedy

"Josephine loved the color purple. Born in Maryland, she grew up in a family of Ravens fans and developed an affinity for all things purple. She rarely left the house without wearing something purple..."
Still praying and shedding tears for all the victims, family and friends. This, I believe, hits everyone's heart no matter where we are from.

Family of Josephine Gay Releases Statement

Does Asperger's effect one's DNA, or Geins? I just heard that they are going study the DNA of the Newtown Shooter. The are going the study the DNA to see if they can identify the Geins of his mental illness that makes people do this horrible acts. Would it be a start to another type of profiling and what would they do with people that have the potential to be violent?

My Life With Asperger's How to live a high-functioning life with Asperger's. by John Elder Robison

RT @LoveThatMax: Too true. RT @hollyrpeete "It’s really hard to unscare people" CT coverage creates dangerous stereotypes of autism.

A request from a cyber friend:

The Parents Like Us Club is a collaborative blog for parents of children and adolescents diagnosed with mental illnesses.
We are working on meeting with Senator Dick Durbin and other senators in Washington DC sometime early in the new year, to bring them our children's stories because mental health care and educational support need to be front and center in whatever plans President Obama has in the wake of the tragedy in Connecticut.
Email us at parentslikeusclub@gmail.com if you'd like to share your story, contact your senator, come to Washington, or any of the above.

Thanks!

I do not keep re-posting these links to be an alarmist, but as resource to educate one's self. More importantly others that are not familiar with disability culture. I do not mean to seem as I have no sympathy for the families, I have cried many times over the weekend.  What happen last week will effect generations. Not only there will be un-opened presents under the Christmas tree, but this could end marriages and families.

This is an interesting article, I remember when I was at Ridge I would get frustrated and had now way to express, or release it.  Sometime it would get to the point that they would take to the PT room and let me beat the shit out of a bean bag chair. Who knows if that was wrong, or right?

Why are they wasting time taking the same sex marriage act to the Supreme court? People voted and it will be a law now, same sex marriage will not kill people, or be the end of society.  The bigger issue is the innocent people that keep getting killed by guns. At least 27, including 18 children, dead in Connecticut school shooting: report
