When I joined FaceBook, I had a lot of people connect to me that saw the Doc King Gimp and a few that also purchase a piece of my art. Ron was one of the lucky ones to own a piece of my art, the brave soul put it on a credit card. When he hung it up in his home, there was one color in the painting he liked so much, he painted the room that color. Ron is a graphic Artist, so we trade work my favorite piece was when he morphed me into the rabbit from Donny Darko!

Studio Days

Although I have multiple art shows around the corner, I do not feel rushed to create art. Wifey might say on studio mornings,  I am like a thoroughbred crashing around in the gate before the race. Once I do hit the studio, I go on cruise control not worrying about things around me, or how far is the finish line. Some days Brianna just puts on the music and we just break for lunch and other days we might talk about each other's work and other "stuff". It is just all part of the process of creating awesomeness!

Artist's Mediums By Seasons

I am a seasonal artist when it comes to my mediums, although oils is my medium of choice I do not like to use it during the hot months. When i do paint I like dress in pants a lot shirts to cover up as much as I can. Even when the paint feels heavier when it is hot, plus it is nice to changes mediums every few months since the each can offer a different quality to the subjects you are working. Also one medium can trigger an idea to try with another medium.

I often spend the warm months working with pastels and when I was at TU, I would do ceramics. Even with those mediums I would sweat my buttock off  As an artist, it is interesting how different factors can effect one work. My best days of working are when it is raining, or snowy.

The Artist Way

For years people have been saying I need to find an easier way to create my art. As I get older they think my body is going to give out from sitting on the floor in the W position and always using my neck to paint and draw. It is almost impossible to find a dress shirt that fit, because my neck is so muscly.

Being a true artist and pushing myself the next step with my medium by using my hands, I have gone the opposite way. By using my hands to draw, it puts my whole body in motion. I call it the “perfect chaos”, because it is controlling the uncontrollable.  When I first started to drawing with my hands it was so frustrated, that most people would have asked why and just give up. I know it would be worth the struggle and just another challenge for myself.

So why do it, if it causes me pain mentally and physically? I enjoy the process and the results; I enjoy the ability of work the chalk on the surface and building layers as I blind them together, or push and pull them apart. For me, everyone can see each mark that it take to create the peace that come out of a fire storm of activity.

Voice, Message and Marks

Just by knowing the little art world that I do, is seems that artists are becoming more aware of how unhealthy the old school of art used to be. Some people say you should start using mediums that are less toxic, some people even say do not even eat in your studio. I think one should be safe, but not to the point that you become afraid of the medium that you can become one with.

I have been fining myself in a search for new mediums that I can really put my marks in. For example, ceramics and pastels that I can use with my hands and really develop as layers, I feel that oil paints do not offer this to me.

Maybe I also see how technology is taking the artist hand from their work. Although it is still their voice and message, but how can you really tell who’s hand manipulated the Medium.

For my subject of my work is as important as how I create it.

Great Minds....

I was just typing up some answers for a newspaper article and had the question about the artist I look at. So I looked up Chuck Close, because he has always been one of my staples even before I learn that he was disabled. The reason why I always related my work with my is because of the style he works in, a lot of his work is huge and made up of smaller shapes. So up close you cannot see the whole picture until you are half way across the room.  Just as my pieces, you do not get the impact of my work until you see them from a far. But up close you can see each mark I make.

New Painting Headstick is Complete

I would like to take this time to thank V-LINC, especial John for helping me getting back on track  with the painting attachment.  It really saves me a lot of time, frustration, tape and give me my independence. Without this piece each time I want a different brush, I would have to wait for someone to tape it to  the stick. This piece is a very priceless part of my creative process. Some of my professors and producers would it looks to clean to be mine, come on get to work!

Thank You,
Dan

I Still Love The Smell of Clbolt Blue in The Mornings, But...

I did this at the end the my MFA work. I was thinking what choices we make and the obstacles comes with each choice. As I use pieces of imagery from my art work to create my videos, I will be posting the whole art piece for you to enjoy. I did show Prof. Stein from King Gimp the video/animation that I have been creating that is still a work in progress and he was very interested.  In fact, he might have me go to TU next Fall to play in their new computer lab to see what direction I could take with film.  Although, the computer stuff is interesting and easier on my body, it can never replace working on the surface of the canvas. The idea of me working in film, is to still have the marks that I make. When I do start using a new medium, I think of as a new accent for my art vocabulary and how it relates to my body of work

My Plea For A Father Day Do Over

Last week I started to have a boil; it did not hurt just a lot of pressure. The redness and hardness went across the top of my thigh. But there was a head.
On Saturday Dena and Brooke were playing DR.
Brooke says it is a spider bite like I had. Go to Patient first, they will num it and then work on it.
Later that day Dena tried to pop it. Mostly blood was coming out.
So Sunday (Father’s Day) we went Patient First, they Dr. said it might be an ingrown hair and even though there is a head to it. It is not ready to pop and the hardness is from blood gathering. To prove this he stuck a needle in it and only got blood. But the Dr. did not do this quickly. So I am on antibiotics until Wednesday and maybe then it will be ready to pop.
Afterwards we went on our way and had a picnic at Loch Raven, as we arrived we get into a heated conversation that really had no beginning, end or could really get upset at each other for.
Later when got home Brooke and Dena called dad, this only compounded her fears over my boil. Since dad felt that he had to share his boil stories.
After all of this I did get a happy ending…

P.S.
As we were leaving the place, Dena said she could not handle the size of the needle. I’M THE ONE WHO FLIPPING FELT IT!!!!!

Mentor Group at North Harford Middle Schools

A few weeks ago I was ask by my friend Gail’s mother to come and visit a mentor group that she works with. This turned out to be not your typical engagement; Phyllis and I kept trading emails about how we should proceed. Phyllis planned to show them the film before hand, but what should we do when I arrived. We came up with the idea of doing some painting together; I did this once before with a troop of Brownies and was quite successful.
I can say the same for this time as well, everyone was so focus on their work no one was talking. After we finished the pieces I let the kids give me interpretations’ of my piece, which were very insightful.
